timber vs. veneer  |  construction  |  finishes  |  sustainability

Skram furniture, intended for an audience that values the company’s commitment to sustainable modern design, authentic materials, and uncompromising workmanship, is offered in a variety of standard and custom materials. While some items are offered with both solid timber and veneer options, most items are available in either one or the other. This differentiation is a reflection of the structural and aesthetic requirements of the design, not of quality or durability (for more on the subject, see ‘timber versus veneer’ below).
Skram’s solid timber options—with the exception of p.e.f.c. (pan-european forestry council) certified german beech—are indigenous north american species. Rift sawn white oak, white ash, cherry and walnut are dense timbers, selected both for their visual and structural characteristics as well as their relative ubiquity.
Hardwood veneer options may be domestic or exotic in origin. All have been selected for their unique characteristics of tone and grain, with the intention of offering customers a diversity of natural color without the need for applied stains.
